JOB SUMMARY AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

JOB SUMMARY
This position performs intermediate technical work planning and supervising the
maintenance and operation of Windber Country Club golf course; does related
work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Golf
Course Superintendent. Supervision is exercised over golf course employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally,
up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move
objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

·       Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

·       Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction.

·       Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands,
and/or fingers.

·       Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

·       Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long
distances or moving from one work site to another.

·       Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the
waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower
extremities and back muscles.

·       Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with
fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

·       Vocal Communication: Required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means
of the spoken word.

·       Hearing: Required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

·       Visual Acuity: Required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection
involving small defects and/or small
parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines,
operation of motor vehicles or equipment,
determining the accuracy and thoroughness of
work, and observing general surroundings and
activities.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise,
hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

·       Assists in the planning and supervision of activities related to golf
course maintenance and agronomic operations.

·       Assists with the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants,
shrubs, trees and wetlands on the facility grounds.

·       Maintains irrigation systems and monitors water usage. 

·       Supervises and schedules maintenance staff; ensures that staff is working
within local, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.

·       Supervises subordinates in the proper and safe operation and maintenance
of mechanical and power equipment. 

·       Provides pesticide application for the golf course, calibrates equipment
and determines the proper pesticide and rate of application.

·       Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical
applications in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

·       Assists in the development of the division annual operating budget and
capital improvement plan. 

·       Assists with overseeing service contractors.

·       Purchases all necessary materials and supplies for usage at the golf
course following City policies; reconciles invoices and delivery receipts.

·       Prepares necessary reports on well usage, maintenance activities, and
pesticide applications on golf course.

·       Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to
maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members. 

·       Attends educational and information seminars to keep abreast of
techniques and methods regarding course maintenance.

·       Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by course in agronomy,
horticulture, soil sciences or related field, and three years of progressive
experience in golf course management. Supervisory experience and a college
degree in a related field are preferred.  

Special Qualifications:
A valid driver’s license is required.
Pennsylvania Commercial 07 Spray Licensed Required. Certification by the
Golf Course Superintendents Association of America is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

·       Knowledge of golf course operation and maintenance.

·       Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and
roughs. 

·       Knowledge of various weeds and insect control.

·       Knowledge of proper use and precautions regarding pesticide application.

·       Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in
golf course construction and maintenance work. 

·       Skill in the operation of a light motor vehicle.

·       Skill in supervising, training, and motivating personnel. 

·       Ability to deal skillfully and tactfully with a wide variety of citizens,
answer questions and address complaints.

·       Ability to prepare reports on golf course activity.

·       Ability to determine methods of repair for equipment breakdowns.
